Have you come to the point in your business where you’re thinking about throwing in the towel?
Are you thinking that this thing called Entrepreneurship is just too hard? You find yourself comparing your success with others and it’s obviously working for them but not for you?
Have you started thinking that maybe life would be easier if you gave it all up and found a job? That maybe you aren’t cut out for this?
Are you starting to feel like it’s just a fantasy to think that you can actually make a difference, that people will pay you for your work and that you can consistently make a good living doing what you love?
If this is you, you aren’t alone…
Most highly successful people have been in this same exact position. They too questioned their ability often, wanted to quit or even did quit more than once. And the only reason they became successful is because they refused to quit for good! They found the strength to stand back up, dust themselves off and try again.
I know this doesn’t sound encouraging, you may be saying to yourself right now, “I don’t know if I have the strength to get up again, how much more can I handle”.
The ups and downs…
If there are no ups and downs in your life, it means you are dead!
Three years ago this month I launched my current business and I thought I was on top of the world. I thought that I finally hit the jackpot and it was going to be super easy to grow a successful business. I had something people wanted and all I had to do was tell them what I was doing and there’d be lined up to get in.
Boy was a wrong! Just like everything else I’ve done, including my entertainment business and my animal rescue business, this too was going to take hard work, education, patience, trial and error and a lot of heartache and tons of persistence even when I couldn’t see how it was going to work. Basically blood sweat and a lot of tears.
Today I sit here and tell you that yes I’ve had some $10,000 months and those are amazing but I can also tell you that I have months where sales are down, people are slow to move forward and I think to myself “does it really have to be this hard?”.
From the outside it can look like everything’s just wonderful for me. Yes I have clients, yes I have successful community events, yes I have my own private studio, an amazing team, support at home and everything you’d think would make my life just wonderful.
But just like you, I have doubts, ups and downs, negative self-talk and thoughts of giving it all up. Even though I read inspiring books, listen to inspirational teachers and surround myself with amazing people, I too am human with insecurities that leave me questioning my ability to hit the level of success I’ve dreamed about.
Then I remind myself that there is now magic wand, fairy dust or one big secret that’s going to cause everything to all of a sudden click. I remind myself that success is a journey and if I keep going, celebrating my successes I will reach my goals. It’s an accumulation of small wins sprinkled in with a whole lot of setbacks, frustration, failure and plain old hard work.
The journey of an entrepreneur is unlike any other journey. We keep getting knocked down and we stand back up. We feel stuck, but we find a way to get unstuck, put one foot in front of the other and move forward, even if it’s only baby steps and it feels impossible.
The Sweet Spot…
When we have wins… those times when we are in that sweet spot, working with clients and feeling amazing. When we are in the zone doing what only we can do. Using our gifts and talents and seeing the transformation in the people we are helping. It’s at those moments we feel on top of the world.
When we enroll the perfect client, feel inspired and are reminded at that moment of how capable we are. It gives us a high unlike any drug or alcohol and we remember why it is we started this work in the first place. We once again feel unstoppable.
Until the next day when the high is over, we wake up to the fact that once again we are faced with finding more clients, marketing ourselves and figuring out how to make more money. It’s hard to get out of bed, think about dressing up to go to a networking event or write an email to connect with our email list. We feel hung-over and just want to crawl back in bed and sleep our way through a few days.
It’s times like this when we think “maybe I should do something else, this is too hard, why can’t I finally have it all, what’s wrong with me”.
We Are Addicted!
Being an entrepreneur is an addiction. We go through the ups and downs, the highs the lows, the wins and losses, but at the end of the day we can’t imagine doing anything else.
We have an entrepreneurial spirit, though it can be broken, it never really dies. We believe deep in our soul that we are here to do something amazing and we hold out with sometimes only a speck of hope, that things will get better for us soon!
I believe that we are born to be entrepreneurs. It’s in our blood, it’s in our DNA, it’s who we are. There’s no getting around it. Even if you do get a job and work for someone else, you will never feel completely satisfied. You will always be thinking, creating and imagining a life of entrepreneurship. So the truth is you don’t need recovery, just keep on keeping’ on!
Yes it will be hard but not forever
Yes you will have setbacks, but they will be fewer
Yes you will experience lows but the highs are worth it
Yes you will be knocked down, but you won’t stay there long
Yes it would be easier to get a job, but it’s not who you are
Yes you will make it, but you have to keep going to get there!
